Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. However, her parents did not want her to perform until she turned an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry says she didn't want to become an actor during high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, landing minor role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry go back to California to work as a theater actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in the ABC drama Scandal. In the same year, she portrayed a child model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite being connected to the persona.
